Muncie Arts and Culture Council is pleased to celebrate Brink of Summer ArtsWalk on Thursday, May 2, 2019 with an opening reception for Transplanted, a stop-motion animation video game by artists Emily Thornton and Ben Fulcher. The artists will speak about their work at 7:00 PM and will be available to answer questions and share insights about the project and their process with guests. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend. The interactive exhibition of their work will be on view from April 30 to May 3, 2019 12:00 - 5:00 pm in the PlySpace Gallery at 608 East Main Street in downtown Muncie. 

Developed collaboratively by Fulcher and Thornton, Transplanted is a stop-motion video game that explores the benefits of taking care of another living thing and how that connection can change your life. The narrative of the game is centered around a woman named Elaine who has just graduated college and no longer has a goal or focus for her life. The objective of the game is to take care of a plant that is delivered to her house, an act which serves as a catalyst for change in the character’s life. By taking care of the plant, Elaine begins a transformation from lethargic depression to sentimental optimism through taking care of herself. The game plays as a quick, meditative passage through a character’s personal landscape. As each player slowly begins unpacking Elaine’s personal belongings, they are invited into the sentimental values of often innocuous items. The game is a meditation on personal motivation, and overcoming seemingly monumental tasks, one step at a time.

In March, Transplanted was selected as a finalist for the Big Indie Pitch competition at the 2019 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, California, where Fulcher and Thornton shared their project and received industry feedback alongside other indie developers. Both artists will receive their Master of Fine Arts in Animation from Ball State University’s School of Art this spring. This exhibition of their MFA thesis work offers visitors a unique opportunity to interact with Transplanted and the creative process behind it through individual gaming stations, documents of the digital rendering process, and the display of physical elements from the game’s stop-motion design. 

Ben Fulcher received his Bachelors of Fine Arts with a focus in Drawing from Clemson University. He is currently an Master of Fine Arts candidate in Animation at Ball State University School of Art. He spent time teaching English in China and Taiwan. Fulcher was awarded the Aspire Grant from Ball State University in 2018 and 2019. His work has been included in the Independent Talents International Film Festival in Bloomington, IN; the Life Screenings International Film Festival in Clermont, FL; and the Weird Wednesday 0711—Monthly in Stuttgart, Germany.

Emily Thornton received her Bachelors of Science from Huntington University, and is currently a Master of Fine Arts candidate in Animation at Ball State University School of Art.. Her work has been accepted into RAW Natural Born Artist and published in The Broken Plate, and Huntington Chapter Ictus. Thornton is also a recipient of a silver award from the American Advertising Federation of Fort Wayne.

The PlySpace Gallery is an exhibition and project space programmed by the Muncie Arts & Culture Council to support the activities of the PlySpace Residency as well as the objectives of emerging, experimental, and underrepresented artists and art forms. YART is a Yard Sale for Art held on the First Thursday of every May and October! All Art under $40! All Artists handle their sales with you directly!

The pandemic has challenged everyone on Earth, and most recently, my related challenge has been as long-time Director of YART, Muncie’s Yard Sale for Art, coming up - and going fully online - on Thursday, October 1st. The Fall 2020 Muncie YART will happen! All the talented YART Artists will have their work for sale in a special Facebook group I’ve created. We are keeping that yard sale vibe going by all Art being priced under $40 and all Artists handling their own sales. The last Fall YART showcased over 150 Artists! YART is my giant twice-a-year volunteer gift to Muncie. I never charge any Artist to participate; and I have no staff and no budget. Join PlySpace (plyspace.org) and Ball State University School of Art for the visiting artist lecture for PlySpace Resident Fellow Natan Diacon-Furtado. Diacon-Furtado will speak about his work and answer questions about his practice and time spent in Muncie at the PlySpace Residency, a program of the Muncie Arts and Culture Council (munciearts.org). 

This event will be held on Thursday, October 29th at 6 PM-7PM via Ball State School of Art Live (https://sites.bsu.edu/artlive/). A live Q&A will follow the lecture. Attendees can view the lecture for free. 

Over the last 3 weeks, Diacon-Furtado has worked with 2D Foundation students at Ball State University School of Art in a virtual collaboration. Our Patterns, a project spanning 6 separate classes and including over 100 student participants who developed pattern-based works to create a community “quilt” of patterns, visible on Instagram (@ourpatterns_Muncie). The public is encouraged to follow the progress of this project online, which will culminate in a projected exhibition on the exterior of the PlySpace building on First Thursday, November 5th.

Diacon-Furtado is an internationally recognized and award-winning Brazilian and American artist and designer who has exhibited globally in venues including the Venice Biennale of Architecture and the Buenos Aires International Biennial of Architecture. His design work has been featured in numerous publications including The New York Times and Dwell magazine, and he is a founding partner of the New Orleans based arts-focused design studio opossum (itsopossumtime.com).

PlySpace is a program of the Muncie Arts and Culture Council in collaboration with Ball State University School of Art and Sustainable Muncie Corporation, supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Join PlySpace and BSU School of Art, for a final projection performance of the Our Patterns Muncie project.

This multi-channel installation in the courtyard of Ball State University’s Art and Journalism building represents an emotional physical culmination for the Our Patterns - Muncie project: a three-week collaboration between initiating artist and PlySpace Fellow Natan Diacon-Furtado and over 100 students and 5 faculty members of the school of art’s 2D Design Fundamentals program.

Throughout the project, students responded to project prompts provided by Diacon-Furtado and facilitated by the BSU faculty. Each prompt was posted on Instagram at @Ourpatterns_Muncie, and is still available for the public to follow along with the project. In order to give the students and public a way to watch the iterative creative project unfold, the students were instructed to post their working and final designs on Instagram, creating a collaborative digital "quilt" with blocks of pattern.

The project continues to live on indefinitely as a digital community quilt displayed through Instagram (@Ourpatterns_muncie), and as a testament to the power of forming intentional communities through creativity.

On Thursday the 12th of November, we will present the final installment, a multi-channel installation that will feature the large-scale projections of student-designed patterns in a random sequence, injecting chance and randomness into the quilt as a way of making new links and discoveries in this collaboratively built visual language.

This event will be held outdoors in the BSU School of Art Sculpture Courtyard. You can access the courtyard from the parking lot between the Art and Journalism Building and the Teachers College. The projections will be visible from 6:30 - 8 PM. Masks are required. This event is free and open to the public.

This community art sale, with a goal of making art affordable and accessible to everyone, brings together Artists and Art patrons in a casual and unique setting. The Spring 2022 Muncie YART will be held in conjunction with the 2022 Brink of Summer ArtsWalk on Thursday, June 2nd, from 5-8p. You can find YART and LIVE music performances at Canan Commons, Muncie's great urban greenspace park and amphitheater by the roundabout on South Walnut Street in Downtown Muncie, Indiana.

Intro to Vinyl Creations promo image featuring the mini zip bag and tumbler to be customized by participants.

Participants will get hands-on instruction from professional educator Brittany Ciempola to design, cut, and apply their own vinyl creations using Cricut Design Space. During the three-hour workshop participants will customize a mini zip bag and a tumbler drinking cup.

Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company is proud to highlight the art of graphic artist John Morris during the First Thursday Gallery Walk - TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE Edition. The artist will be on hand. Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend. At 6:15, John will speak about his work and his process. 

John Morris’s art builds a conversation between the digital world and the actual world. His works are built in stages by first designing digital collages from comic book images and then meticulously recreating them as real collages with physical clippings. When that is complete, he then translates the composition into its final iteration using Perler Beads. This process mimics the action of flattening a digital file and highlights the value Morris places on manual labor in the digital age through the labor-intensive use of beads,

The exhibit will remain on view through April 27.  

Celebrating the Total Solar Eclipse, Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company invites all to join us for an Open House. Refreshments will be served including "Close Encounters Pie" in the shape of an alien and mashed potatoes in the shape of the Devils Tower.  

T-Shirts designed by John Morris commemorating the eclipse will be for sale.

Steven Spielberg set his film Close Encounters of the Third Kind in Muncie Indiana. Gordy is supporting an effort to place a large scale bronze sculpture of the Devil's Tower in Muncie as a public landmark on the 50th Anniversary of the movie in 2027!

Kaleena Sales is an Associate Professor of Graphic Design and Chair of the Department of Art and Design at Tennessee State University, an HBCU (Historically Black College or University) in Nashville, TN. Her research and writing are rooted in racial justice and equity, with a specific focus on the ways culture informs aesthetics. Kaleena is co-author of the book, Extra-Bold: A Feminist, Inclusive, Anti-Racist, Non-Binary Field Guild for Graphic Designers, and editor of Centered: People and Ideas Diversifying Design, published by Princeton Architectural Press.
